Working primarily with calligraphy inks, graphite and liquids, such as vodka and tea, Carne Griffiths’ fascination with drawing focuses on the creation and manipulation of the drawn line. Images explore human, geometric and floral forms, in a combination of both literal and abstract translation and in response to images and situations encountered in daily life.
Carne Griffiths is best recognised for his expressive portraits created using the unusual combination of ink mixed with a variety of different fruit and herbal teas to create unique effects. He will often experiment with adding new materials to get different effects, which has included embroidered thread sewn into the paper and the use of liquid pens which he could splash like paint, but also use in a controlled way as you would a pen or a pencil.
If you like Griffith's art he has launched a Kickstarter campaign to create a deck of playing cards which feature a number of his artworks. These are a beautiful way to see a large range of his images for an affordable price - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/345201666/carne-griffiths-artist-playing-cards-in-ink-tea-an/description
We’ve all accidentally knocked over a mug of tea or a drink, totally drenching, and possibly ruining, a letter or some other such document, but Carne Griffiths has used this perhaps unorthodox method to create his beautifully paradoxical art work.
