David Mach is one of the UK’s most successful and respected artists, known for his dynamic and imaginative large scale collage, sculpture and installations using a wide range of materials, including coat hangers, matches, magazines and many others.
The first of Mach's sculptures I saw was a giant silver back made of coat hangers, what struck me was the scale of the piece, the art was supersized and incredibly imposing. The protruding hooks of the coat hangers gave the sculpture an edge of danger.
Mach's work challenges the viewer through its scale, his installations take this concept to even greater heights.
The coat hangers add an edge to the sculptures, the other pieces in the series including a bust of Mickey Mouse and Jesus on the cross confuse the series. They do not appear to fit with the rest of the work which again forces the viewer to rethink the works and why they are together.
