Jiang Pengyi creates art by experimenting with instagraphic photographic film. He takes shots with a polaroid camera and then messes with the development by adding water to the film whilst it is developing or exposing the film to bursts of light to create unique effects. His latest works involve scraping the developing compounds from the print allowing these to form their own forms with equally unique results.
Much of Pengyi's recent work has focussed on experimenting with found erotica. He photographs the erotica with a polaroid camera and then experiments as the film develops, adding liquids, folding the paper etc.
He also works with larger pieces of instagraphic film in darkrooms exposing the films to flashes of lights in order to create random patterns and colours (images 8,9 and 10 in series above).
Pengyi provides a route map for those who might be suffering artistic block, his experimentation allows new and exciting creations.
The use of Polaroid images in art is growing, Pengyi is taking the medium in new and inventive directions. The fact that much of the result is down to chance, not knowing how the films will react to the treatments makes the work feel quite organic.
