Miles Johnston is a painter and illustrator.
Miles Johnston's transformation series examines four main themes - Deform, Divide, Attract and Recur. Each work features the face or body of a woman who appears to be in a reflective, melancholic and dream-like mood, often set against the backdrop of a natural world containing surreal elements.
His transformation series is shocking, I prefer his pencil sketches to the fully developed paintings, somehow I feel there is more emotion and feeling that comes from the black and white images, an extra layer of darkness and meaning.
His simple pencil drawings are able to evoke meaning due to their simplicity. There is a dark core to the images, a suggestion of different levels and meanings. The choice to deform, divide, attract and recur parts of bodies and faces makes the viewer become aware of ideals of beauty and challenges expected norms.
