Peter Zelei is a Hungarian photographer who specializes in portrait, conceptual imagery, landscapes and also photo manipulations.
Peter Zelei's photographs are filled with beauty and cruelty, with scenes and scenarios that simultaneously enchant and disturb the psyche. Dolls are frequently seen in various states of disrepair, representing the abandoned inner child who is rattling their chains at the edges of our consciousness.
The images I have selected above are from the series Mater Terribilis, his images explore the human psyche displaying elements of good, bad, darkness and light. Other series are not quite as bleak or apocalyptic, playing with reflection but this series most affected me.
So much of art is about showcasing what is beautiful that sometimes a counterpoint is necessary. Zelei's work acts as a mirror to show the hidden elements. Many of his works are based on stories and tales such as The Resurrection of the Rose, Beauty and the Beast and The Unbearable Lightness of Being.
