Pieter Vanden Daele is a Belgian sculptor known for his large bronze sculptures of fish, frogs and aquatic species.
Vanden Daele sculpts his original model out of organic materials such as leaves, wood, leather, wax and many other materials. This results in the rough and elaborate surface of his pieces, thus beautifully rendering the actual skin of fish.
I first came upon Vanden Daele's work at an internal design show earlier this year. I was really taken by the size and scale of the casts. The rough hewn edges and colours of the bronzes really bring the beautiful sculptures to life. They are not perfect which in a way id their perfection.
I have always loved water and as a fisherman the chance to get your hands on an 80lb carp is a once in a lifetime thing.
These sculptures come alive in the light, they have movement and for something so large grace.
